Social media use is linked with low relationship commitment due to the presence of online alternative romantic partners with whom time and emotions are invested regularly.

Research Question

What factors make partners more susceptible to social media addiction?

Recent research (Abbasi, 2018) showed that age is negatively linked with social media addiction and the total number of social media accounts one has. That is, younger partners had higher social media addiction scores and reported having a greater number of social media accounts. Social media addiction was also negatively linked to romantic relationship commitment. Finally, individuals who had higher social media addiction scores also reported having a greater number of social media accounts than those with low social media addiction scores.Abbasi, I. S. (2018a). Social media and committed relationships: What factors make our romantic relationship vulnerable?
